On May 12, the University Society’s founders met in Petre Melikishvili’s residence in Tbilisi. Ekvtime Takaishvili presided. On that day, the Georgian Free University Society was founded, which helped create the university. In fall 1917, the University’s founders worked to build a college. It was planned to create just one faculty originally – philosophy, which would have integrated humanities, natural science, and mathematics. Late this month, Georgian news announced the university’s first students.
Thus, the first national University in the Caucasus opened on King David’s birthday, January 26, 1918. (new style February 8). Petre Melikishvili became the university’s first rector after Ivane Javakhishvili nominated him. Philosophy was led by Ivane Javakhishvili.
