Established in 1918, the Institution of Georgia was the first national university in the Caucasus and the basis for a European-style higher education system in Georgia that was grounded in Georgian educational traditions.
As the fight for independence from the Russian empire heated up in the early 19th century, so did the concept of establishing a university. After the death of the renowned Georgian public figure Ilia Chavchavadze in the 1860s, a new generation emerged, headed by Chavchavadze himself. This new generation is linked to a new stage of spiritual regeneration in our country’s history. The fight to create the institution picked up steam throughout those years.
Since Tbilisi’s Nobiliary Manorial Estate Bank was established, there have been concrete opportunities to set up a university. To the best of our knowledge, it was the only Russian bank that used its profits to further the country’s educational, cultural, and economic goals. Ivane Javakhishvili, a Petersburg-educated assistant professor, founded Georgian University at the turn of the 20th century. Ivane Javakhishvili, who was in Petersburg at the time of the February 1917 revolution, immediately began planning a university.
On May 12, the University Society’s founders met in Petre Melikishvili’s residence in Tbilisi. Ekvtime Takaishvili presided. On that day, the Georgian Free University Society was founded, which helped create the university. In fall 1917, the University’s founders worked to build a college. It was planned to create just one faculty originally – philosophy, which would have integrated humanities, natural science, and mathematics. Late this month, Georgian news announced the university’s first students.
Thus, the first national University in the Caucasus opened on King David’s birthday, January 26, 1918. (new style February 8). Petre Melikishvili became the university’s first rector after Ivane Javakhishvili nominated him. Philosophy was led by Ivane Javakhishvili.
