In 2001, while Elene Jamarjashvili was a student at Atlanta State University, she started the Georgian American University (GAU) as her MBA project (USA). At first, the university was meant to be a law school, with graduates getting a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
Elene Jamarjashvili met Kenneth A. Cutshaw, a famous lawyer in both the U.S. and Europe, in Atlanta. Mr. Cutshaw really wanted the university to be built, so he agreed to help the university make a partnership with one of the best law schools in the United States, American University’s Washington College of Law (Washington, DC).
Elene Jamarjashvili went back to Tbilisi at the start of 2002 to work on the business plan and look for investors (s). At that time, she met R. Michael Cowgill, the US-funded consultant to the Georgian government for the Baku-Ceyhan (BTC) and South Caucasus (SCP) pipeline projects. Mr. Cowgill agreed to help Ms. Jamarjashvili and then took over as President of the University.
The Georgian American University in Tbilisi was set up.
Even though there were already two international business schools in Tbilisi at the time, there was enough interest in a program that combined Business and Law to open a Business School and Law School at the Georgian American University Tbilisi in 2005.
In February 2005, Georgian and American investors came together to form a joint limited liability company. This hardworking group and its Board of Directors set up standards for financial and operational management that met strict international, ethical, and educational standards. This group of investors had a wide range of skills and knowledge.
During the 2011–2012 school year, GAU added a program in international relations and diplomacy to its Law School. This led to the Law and Social Sciences School getting a new name. Due to the success of both its Business School and its Law School, as well as state priorities and market demand, GAU opened its Natural Sciences and Engineering School in the 2012/2013 school year. GAU added the Liberal Education and Humanitarian Sciences School for the 2013–14 school year.
